World We Imagine Part 3: Film for the World

World We Imagine Part 3

Film for the World

Audiences today are more global than ever. We have access to original stories from all around the world, and are therefore becoming more sensitive to the depictions of different cultures on-screen. Companies are finally realizing the value they can create by accurately portraying different groups of people, and they now have to search for the best way to find these fresh stories. They’re starting to change after getting in trouble time and time again for miscasting roles and broadly appropriating cultures.

With that in mind, Film for the World is an organization that goes into each of the underrepresented countries, partnered with a seasoned filmmaker willing to donate their time, and helps provide local talent with the resources and knowledge they need to start making their own films. We would ideally use equipment donated by various studios and companies who want to play a role in our work, but would rely on local populations for support staff in order to keep the productions authentic. Our main role in this operation would be to put the hundreds of pieces involved together, allowing the filmmakers to focus solely on getting their message and their story across. We would combine their perspective with our Hollywood expertise to reach a synergistic level of storytelling.

The overall process would start with a general application, marketed before we even arrive in the country. Writers would submit their pitch or idea, and based on the amount of resources we have, we would select how many projects are ultimately going to move forward. Then after meeting with the filmmakers and selecting our final groups, we would go with our Hollywood mentor and show them how to make a film. Using the resources donated to the organization, the local filmmakers would learn how the process works and end up with a project that’s the product of their hard work. From there, we’d give them the opportunity to pitch their film to studios in the hopes of ultimately getting it released.

Hollywood studios want to make diverse projects to appeal to more audiences, but they often don’t know how to do so. Film for the World would allow them to simply provide their resources, and in turn have the opportunity to release a truly authentic film that they didn’t have to stress about making. The organization provides a tremendous benefit to everyone involved, and I hope that AMDP considers it as a viable candidate for investment.
